Keynote: Teach Us Too, Jonathan Bryan
Friday June 28, 2024 9:30am - 10:25am BST
Jonathan Bryan attended his local Special School with the label “Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities” (PMLD), where he was taught very basic letters and numbers with little or no progression from one year to the next. When he was 7 years old, and at the start of year 3, Jonathan’s mother took him out of special school for a few hours a day to teach him to read and write. They started whole word reading, and basic phonics and progressed on to spelling out words and writing sentences. By the age of 9 Jonathan was using a spelling board to write everything that he wanted to say, and he left special school to join his peers at his local primary school.

Following his recovery from a serious illness when he was 10, Jonathan felt he had been given extra time to make a difference in education for children who are non-verbal like him. In June 2016, as he was recovering, he set up the Teach Us Too campaign which was covered in national media alongside a petition to action change. He then went on to establish this charity by the same name to continue his pursuit.

Sibling sexual abuse - beginning the conversation
Friday June 28, 2024 9:30am - 10:25am BST
104
Sibling sexual abuse involves sexual behaviour that is not age-appropriate, is not transitory, and is not motivated by developmentally appropriate curiosity. Research indicates that it is a common form of intra-familial child sexual abuse; it may be up to three times as common as sexual abuse perpetrated by parents. And yet, it is not often spoken about. This workshop aims to begin to change that through a facilitated discussion.

Keynote: Teach Us Too, Jonathan Bryan
Friday June 28, 2024 10:35am - 11:30am BST

The Online Alternative Provision Experts
Friday June 28, 2024 10:35am - 11:30am BST
202
Academy21 is the first online alternative provision to be accredited by the DFE.

Do you have students that have struggled to engage with education this year? Or students with low level behavioural concerns causing disruption to your classrooms?

 We can help.

Our DfE accredited offering is an effective tool for early intervention, providing the support students need to:

  • Maintain a consistent learning schedule.
  • Develop positive learning habits.
  • Stay engaged with their education.

Examples of students we can help:

  • Year 10 students who need some time out to focus without falling behind in their GCSE studies.
  • Year 9 students who need to re-engage with learning and close gaps before starting their KS4 education.
  • Year 7/8 students who perhaps did not transition well or where attendance has started to dip.  We can provide a short-term respite from the mainstream classroom whilst ensuring they do not fall further behind in their education.
  • School refusers
  • Onsite truancy
  • medical needs
  • Behaviour concerns
  • exclusions
  • awaiting placements elsewhere

We exist to support young people, their schools, and families and to provide a supportive pathway through their education and on to successful futures.
Come along to hear more about the DfE's new accreditation scheme for online providers and our Ofsted inspection.

Brief Description
❗Attendance at first Interactive Fiction Session is a pre-requisite❗
During this follow-up second (but still small) session we will be exploring how to make our stories more visually appealing, and how to add logic code to our stories to keep track of such aspects as score, or inventory...

Exanded Description
Session Two:
📚In this session you will extend your use of Twine, by adding such elements as:
🖼️Adding images to add appeal, interest, and retention?
📹Adding Video would add interest, excitement.
🎮Adding a score so that the reader (player) could read the story again hoping to improve score..
🔑Adding things the reader can "pick up", perhaps a door will open if you have the "red key"
🧅Adding random flavour text so the story is "different" each time you read it.
❓ A question and answer session should be feasible too.

If time some additional possibilities may be explored
💬How to change the size of the text.....
💬How to change the font of the text..... limited range of fonts - will need to experiment
💬 hope to add additional here, pending plans......

Craft of The Classroom
Friday June 28, 2024 12:45pm - 1:40pm BST
203
In 1997, when I completed my PGCE, I read Michael Marland's seminal text The Craft of The Classroom. Its guiding principles have remained with me for over twenty-five years - and throughout a career in which I have been a Head of Department, a Head of Year, a SENCo and Head Teacher of two secondary schools. My intention for this workshop is for us to reflect, as a professional body, on whether teaching can and should be viewed as craft? Alongside what has changed over the past twenty-five years of teaching? And what continues to remain the same?

The tool and programme are designed to help schools reduce their energy consumption through analysis of smart meter data. Last year, the average Energy Sparks school reduced their energy consumption by 10% which not only saved significant carbon dioxide emissions but also thousands of pounds for each school.
